Deconstructing the Phantom: Duhem and the Scientific Realism Debate

Abstract For many decades, Duhem has been considered a paradigmatic instrumentalist, and while some commentators have argued against classifying him in this way, it still seems prevalent as an interpretation of his philosophy science. Yet such construal bears scant resemblance to the views presented own works—so little, indeed, that might be said constitute no more than mere phantom with respect actual thought. In article, we aim deconstruct phantom, tracing sources misconceptions surrounding ideas pinpointing and/or causes its proliferation. We subsequently point out discuss those elements that, taken together, support view scientific realist sophisticated kind. Finally, defend our thought suggestions effect is oriented towards neither instrumentalism nor realism.
